Chance’s Magnificent Colouring World
Circa Spring 2016.
Now this was one of the highlights from my year in Chicago. A bunch of people from all over the city in essentially a massive playground listening to Chance the Rappers new mixtape. Cool huh?
We got told to meet up at a school in the suburbs where a bunch of school buses were waiting. I kinda wanted to experience the famous yellow school bus I saw in pretty much every kids tv show growing up so I got to tick that box off the list. The buses dropped us off at what looked like an abandoned warehouse and dipped straight after. Walk inside and it’s pitch-black. A projector plays a video of Chance saying “welcome to the magnificent colouring world” on a curtain which then drops…
Bouncy castles, slides, giant chess, loads of sweets, dancers, inflatable toys and a huge canvas to draw on with sharpies and paint. I previously wrote about how cars can bring together people from different backgrounds and the same applies to music. In a world full of so much bullshit it was heart-warming to see strangers listening to music and having fun together. It was dope.
Shout-out to Chance for hosting this in Chicago. Another shout-out to the people of Chicago. I went downtown to watch the live streaming of Kanye’s Life of Pablo a few months before this and what I learnt from both events was that Chicagoans are awesome.
Fun (or not so fun) fact: The interlude from Chance’s Acid Rap started playing while I was writing this post (considering my Spotify library which consists of 4000+ songs was on shuffle - that’s kinda nuts).
